One of the first questions we hear after "can you come now?" is "will insurance cover this?" It's a fair question — biohazard cleanup isn't cheap, and most people have never had to think about whether their policy applies. Here's what's generally true in Alberta, with the caveat that every policy is different.

What's often covered

Many Alberta homeowner and tenant insurance policies include coverage for cleanup related to an unexpected, sudden event — an accidental death, a violent crime, or a medical emergency involving blood or bodily fluids. This is sometimes bundled under "trauma and vandalism cleanup" or a similar rider rather than listed by name, so it's worth asking your insurer directly rather than assuming it isn't there.

What's typically not covered

Coverage usually gets murkier when the situation developed gradually rather than suddenly, or when it stems from illegal activity on the property in a way the policy specifically excludes. Vehicle decontamination after a recovered stolen vehicle, for instance, is more often a claim against the vehicle's own insurance or the responsible party than a homeowner's policy.

How to approach your insurer

What we do to help

We document affected areas with photos before and after cleanup and provide an itemized invoice you can submit directly to your insurer. We're not able to guarantee what your specific policy covers, but we can make the claims process as straightforward as possible on our end.

Don't let cost uncertainty delay cleanup

Biohazard situations often get more hazardous and more expensive to resolve the longer they're left untreated. If you're unsure about coverage, call us anyway — we'll walk you through documentation options while you sort out the insurance question in parallel.

Questions about your specific situation? Call and we'll talk it through.
