Biohazard cleanup is not a heavily branded industry the way plumbing or landscaping is, which makes it harder to know who you're actually calling. Here's what to look for — and what to ask — before letting any company into your home or business.

Ask about training, not just experience

"We've done this before" isn't the same as formal training in bloodborne pathogen handling, biohazard waste disposal regulations, and protective equipment use. A certified technician should be able to explain, specifically, how they were trained to handle the situation you're calling about.

Ask how they handle disposal

Biohazardous waste can't legally go in a regular dumpster. Ask what happens to contaminated materials after they leave your property — a legitimate company will have a clear, specific answer involving proper containment and disposal through approved channels, not a vague one.

Ask about protective equipment

For fentanyl or narcotic contamination in particular, gloves alone aren't sufficient. Ask what protective equipment technicians use for the specific type of job you need — this is a quick way to tell whether a company understands the actual risk profile of your situation.

Ask about discretion

For crime scene, trauma, or sensitive residential situations, ask how the company handles vehicle branding, technician conduct on-site, and confidentiality with third parties like insurers or neighbors. A company that's thought this through will have a real answer, not just "we're professional."

Ask what happens if something is more complicated than expected

Sometimes a job that looks straightforward turns out to involve more extensive contamination or structural damage. Ask how the company handles scope changes — do they reassess and communicate, or is it just a bigger invoice at the end?
